India's recent Test defeat at Headingley has sparked debate, but head coach Gautam Gambhir is standing by his team, particularly the lower order. Despite scoring 835 runs and featuring five centurions, including Rishabh Pant with a century in each innings, India fell short against England.
The match was marred by two significant batting collapses:
These collapses undermined India's strong position after winning the toss, allowing England to chase down a target of 371.
Shubman Gill, who marked his captaincy debut with a century in the first innings, revealed the team aimed for a target around 435. Gambhir, however, believes a first-innings score of 570-580 would have secured dominance.
Gambhir defended the lower order's performance, despite Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna being dismissed playing aggressive shots. "It's not that they weren't applying themselves. Sometimes people fail. And that's okay," Gambhir stated. "It's not like they're not working hard in the nets. Even proper batters fail. Hopefully, they'll learn."
He emphasized that the collapses weren't the sole reason for the defeat.
Another critical factor was India's poor catching. They dropped seven catches throughout the match, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a repeat offender. A dropped catch of Ben Duckett on 97 proved particularly costly, as he went on to score 149.
Gill acknowledged the dropped catches as an area for improvement, stating, "Chances don't come easy, especially on wickets like these, and we dropped quite a few catches."
However, Gambhir dismissed the "young team" narrative as an excuse for the loss. "Every defeat is bad. It's not about a young team or an experienced team. It's an Indian team... A young team is not an excuse."
He affirmed the team's commitment to winning, saying, "We will turn up every Test match thinking that we can win the test match and win the series."
Gambhir also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would only play two more Test matches, according to a pre-series workload management plan. The decision on which two matches Bumrah will participate in is yet to be finalized.
Despite Bumrah's limited availability, Gambhir expressed confidence in the remaining bowlers. "We absolutely have the bowling attack [to compete]. We believe in them. We trust in them... those are inexperienced bowlers but they will keep getting better."
