Carlos Alcaraz crushed Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in straight sets—6-1, 6-0, 6-3—to storm into the third round of the 2025 US Open. Playing on August 27 at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Spanish second seed delivered a commanding performance, breaking Bellucci’s serve seven times without facing a single break point.

Alcaraz struck 32 winners and won an impressive 86 percent of points on his first serve, showcasing his blend of aggression and precision. The second set was especially one-sided—a 6-0 sweep that underlined his complete control of the match.

Remarkably, Alcaraz has yet to drop serve in the tournament. Against Bellucci, he didn’t even allow a break-point opportunity, further highlighting his dominance.

“I played great from the beginning to the last ball. I know Mattia’s level and today wasn’t his day, but I tried to make the most of his mistakes, trying to be in the match getting a good rhythm,” Alcaraz said in his on-court interview.

“I think a few things have to improve that I didn’t feel as good as I wanted, but in general I’m really happy with the performance today.” Alcaraz added.

The match lasted just 1 hour and 36 minutes, a clinical display that erased memories of his shock second-round exit last year. In the third round, Alcaraz will face Italy’s Luciano Darderi, who defeated the USA’s Eliot Spizzirri in the previous round.

Collignon stuns Casper Ruud

World No. 107 Raphael Collignon produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 US Open, stunning 12th seed Casper Ruud in a dramatic five-set battle—6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5—to book his place in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Making only his second appearance in a major main draw, the Belgian displayed tremendous composure and resilience, clawing back after dropping two sets to one. Calling it “the best day of my life,” Collignon highlighted just how significant the victory was for his budding career.

For Ruud, the 2022 finalist, the defeat added to a frustrating run of results. He admitted to playing with “little to no confidence” and revealed ongoing struggles with a knee problem and inconsistency on his forehand.

Collignon’s reward is a third-round clash with Czech Jiri Lehecka, who overcame Argentina’s Toms Martn Etcheverry.
